COLUMBIA, MISSOURI– On Monday, Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones announced that the Boone County Sheriff’s Department has been asked to launch a criminal investigation into the actions of two police officers in Missouri.

The investigation comes after a video surfaced online showing one of the officers punching a man who was pinned to the ground outside a bar in response to a disturbance.

Along with the criminal investigation, the Columbia Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation into the matter.

One of the two officers in Missouri was recorded on video repeatedly punching a man who was pinned to the ground, causing him to bleed.

The 9-second video showed the incident where the man was punched in the face five times while someone in the background can be heard saying, “He’s punching him in the face. Oh my God.” Columbia Police Chief Geoff Jones said that he was grateful that someone brought this incident to his attention and that the department has a high expectation that officers use force appropriately and intervene when they observe excessive force.

Jones stated that he would enforce this expectation, and he asked the Boone County Sheriff’s Department to conduct a criminal investigation into the incident. The Columbia Police Department will also conduct an internal investigation.
