Daniela and Sofia Mendoza

According to a letter sent to parents by the Wylie Independent School District, both elementary school students Daniela and Sofia Mendoza were killed in the shooting.

The letter stated that Daniela was in fourth grade while her younger sister Sofia was in second grade. The girls’ mother, Ilda Mendoza, is currently in the hospital in critical condition.

The school district expressed deep sadness over the loss of their students, stating that words cannot express the grief they feel. They extended their thoughts and prayers to the Mendoza family, the families of the other victims, and all those affected by the tragic event.

Cox Elementary School Principal Krista Wilson described the sisters as “rays of sunshine” in the letter, highlighting the positive impact they had on the school community.

Wilson assured parents that Daniela and Sofia will always be remembered and encouraged them to hug their kids and tell them they love them.

The school district has decided not to inform the students of the tragic news and will leave it up to parents to have that conversation with their children. Counseling services are being offered to students, staff, and families to help cope with the tragedy.

The letter urged the community to support the Mendoza family and the families of the other victims during this difficult time. The school district pledged to do everything in its power to provide support to those affected by the senseless act of violence.
